Causes of Check Engine Light
There can be a variety of reasons why your check engine light is on, including:
Gas cap is loose, damaged or missing—without it, you can lose fuel through evaporation, resulting in more trips to the gas pump.
Mass airflow sensor or MAF needs replacing—this measures the amount of air entering the engine and determines how much fuel you need to run the engine smoothly.
O2 sensor (your oxygen sensor) needs replacing—your oxygen sensor, located in your engine’s exhaust system, measures the amount of unburned oxygen.
Catalytic converter needs replacing (usually due to neglect)—it helps protect the environment by converting carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Not replacing it means your car will not pass an emissions test.
Spark plugs or plug wires need replacement—spark plugs ignite the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. The spark plug wires carry the spark from the ignition coil to the plugs.
